The results of the Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court 2022

We are happy to announce the winner of the Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court 2022 – the SMU team. More of it, it is 2nd time champion at the prestigious Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot in five years. SMU won the championship in 2017 and reached the championship final in its debut in 2015. It also became the 2nd runner-up in 2019. This year, the SMU team emerged champions after eight intensive matches in the competition’s 14th edition, held between 28 February and 4 March 2022. SMU competed with teams from China, India, France, the US, the Netherlands, and Iran. This year’s case concerned loans made to a state, bribery committed by agents of a state, and the jurisdiction of an arbitration tribunal.

The SMU team was represented by Yong Pung How School of Law (YPHSL) students, Neela Alagusundaram (Year 3), Justin Lai (Year 3), Keith Toh (Year 4), Zhang Yuqian (Year 4), who were coached by SMU alumni Daniel Liu (YPHSL, 2013) and Luis Duhart (YPHSL, 2017).

Last year the victory went to the National University of Singapore.


The FIAMC is a moot competition co-organized by the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History and Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP. It is the oldest student competition in the area of investment arbitration, with the first edition of the moot taking place in 2008. FIAMC is the most prestigious student competition in the area of investment protection law. Its focus is on the oral presentation of legal arguments before an arbitral tribunal composed of specialists in the field.
